The good deed

Free goods in the time of
pandemic

May 22, 2021 | 11:03pm

The idea of community pantries is to share free goods such as vegetables, snacks, eggs, rice, can goods, and many more. Community pantries became a very effective move to provide and extend support for Filipinos during the ECQ in 2021—people who have less and cannot afford essential goods benefited from this action. The Maginhawa Community Pantry, started by Ana Patricia Non, inspired other communities, high-profile personalities, and organizations. Soon enough, many other community pantries have sprung out from different places all over the country.

But even though the idea received positive feedback, some still questioned its purpose. Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade, spokesperson of the government's anti-communist task force, compared Ana Patricia Non to Satan. Parlade said, "Patricia is one person, right? Same with Satan. Satan gave Eve an apple. That's how it all started." This issue is not the only issue that occurred during the trend of community pantries. But netizens on social media contradict Parlade’s statement. Since Community Pantry started, it has more positive effect on our current situation and delivered what people need at this time. It should not be considered nor compared to the work of Satan.

Another unfortunate event happened when actress Angel Locsin celebrated her 36th birthday last April 23, 2021. As part of the celebration of her birthday, the actress decided to organize her own community pantry. People heard the news and went. But unfortunately, a senior citizen collapsed as he waited for his turn to get a share of the goods. The man was rushed to the hospital but passed away shortly after he was sent there.

Many people say that the rise of community pantries in this time of the COVI-19 crisis is due to the lack of support from the government and the incompetence of the administration during the ECQ. They could not even provide the most basic needs, so Filipinos had to rely on themselves. Many people lost their jobs and have no savings and stock of essential goods during the ECQ. This is obviously the reason why the community pantries instantly got so much attention; people who are in need soon found them to be essential in these trying times because to them, it is their only source of food and sustainment.
