Filipino netizens got disappointed and questioned the results after Mexican candidate Andrea Meza won as the new Miss Universe 2020.
Mexico got the highest score, followed by Brazil and Peru. However, a lot of Filipino netizens were unimpressed with the results. They showed their disappointment through social media by pointing out the mistakes and cheating on scores, adding the host, Olivia Culpo, being called a "lackluster" who is seemingly tired during the pageant.
Kylle Andrada, a user on Facebook, said, "the batch is one of the weakest in communication skills. Their answers aren't as iconic as the answers of the past winners. They lack conviction, their thoughts aren't well organized, and no one even gave a remarkable answer."
A lot of Filipinos also gave their insights about Rabiya Mateo to answer all the questions properly if given a chance to enter at the top five candidates.
"If Rabiya entered the top 5, she could've answered all the questions with much confidence. She's the best Miss Universe we never had," said user @ohmflukeist on Twitter.
Despite the negative feedback that the Miss Universe pageant has received, some people supported and accepted the results.
Miss Universe 2015, Pia Wurtzbach, aware of the rumors, called out Filipino netizens, urging them to stop insisting that Meza does not deserve to be Miss Universe to respect the result and accept defeat.
"Let's give her a chance... Bigyan natin ng chance 'yung mga queens na ipakita 'yung galing nila, patunayan 'yung sarili nila," Wurtzbach said. (Let's give her a chance… Give chances to all queens to show themselves and skills.)
Miss Universe Canada 2020 Nova Stevens also urged the public to spread love and positivity after receiving racist and negative comments from some Filipino pageant fans online.
“They’ve worked so hard. Give them the best gift you can give anyone; if you’re not sure what that gift should be, I’ll help you out. Give them love. Nothing else. Just love,” she said.
