The Commission on Elections (Comelec) aims to encourage the youth to register for the 2022 elections in order for them to become politically and socially engaged in politics. Comelec has relaunched their website iRehistro, where people can register to become eligible voters in the upcoming election.

The votes of the youth count because they will be the ones who will benefit in the long run. The youth are now aware of what is happening in their society. In other countries, youths are rallying to fight for their rights and what they are advocating. And that is a big step for them to be noticed by the government. It shows that they are aware of the problems occurring because of the mismanagement of the government.

As of February 18. 2021, the Comelec stated that there are over 58 million registered voters for the 2022 election. According to Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), there are 15 million people who will turn 18 by 2022 who are still not registered voters. This means that the Comelec expects that there will be 73 million registered voters for the 2022 election. In the range of 18-24 years of age, there are over 20 million young voters, but only 11 million are registered.

In the past administrations, the elected candidates were mainly popular or an idol of many who came from showbiz and had no experience running a country. The votes of the youth for the upcoming election will have a significant impact. They will be game-changers for the country because their standards for politicians is not just an actor or actress nor a good looking one but a candidate who attained a high education and has a background of serving a community.

The iRehistro website is very timely and helpful in this time of crisis. It eases the process of registration, especially for the youth. Most of  time goes to surfing the internet, especially during this pandemic. Registration is practically made easy for them, so there is no excuse for not doing so.

Being politically active is not required but a choice. A choice that defines how concerned individuals are in society.

The youth have the right to demand.
